Matthiasson - Ribolla Gialla 2020 750ml
"An "orange wine" made in the ancient style of northern Italy, this Ribolla Gialla makes an unparalleled food wine, filling the gap between white and red with its spiced, nut-brittle and marmalade aromatics and fascinating textural density.
Our Napa Valley Ribolla Gialla represents seven rows in our home Matthiasson vineyard in the western Oak Knoll area of Napa Valley. Our dear friend George Vare had been given a few sticks of Ribolla Gialla budwood from the inimitable Josko Gravner in Friuli, Italy, in 2001, and he grafted it into his own vineyard, which Steve was managing. Steve (and then Jill) fell in love with the variety in the process, and when they purchased their own vineyard in 2006, they immediately grafted the variety onto the 15-year-old Merlot.
Farmed using only organic methods, with fruit trees at the ends of the rows, the vines are serenaded throughout the season by coyotes, owls, bees, and the occasional hum of one of our fully electric tractors.
We have been making "orange wine," or what we call skin-fermented white, from this fruit since 2008 — back before that style was a "thing." Indeed, our Ribolla was one of the first orange wines to have been made in California." - Matthiasson
