Unlike Vintage Port, which is bottled after only two years in wood and ages in bottle, LBV is bottled after four to six years and is ready to drink when bottled. Taylor’s continues to lead the LBV category of Port worldwide, in spite of the fact that many other shippers now also produce an LBV. The wines used to blend Taylor’s LBV were drawn from a reserve of some of the best full bodied red Ports, produced at the 2017 harvest, from grapes grown on Taylor’s own vineyards and on other top properties in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior areas. Tasting Notes: Dense ruby black centre with a narrow brick rim and cerise highlights on the edge. The essence of this superb LBV is the fine red berry and stone fruit character, wonderfully fresh and vibrant, which bursts immediately from the glass. Raspberry, cherry and red plum, subtly infused with richer notes of blackcurrant and liquorice, dominate the nose. Cedary, minty notes and a discreet redolence of violets give the wine a seductive scented dimension. The fine fruit character reappears on the palate which is dense and chewy, the firm slightly austere tannins giving the wine its typically Taylor combination of stamina and restraint. The finish is impressively long and vigorous, with rich dark chocolate flavours adding a touch of lusciousness and opulence to the intense berry fruit. The wines used to produce Fonseca LBV were drawn from a reserve of some of the best full-bodied red Ports produced at the 2018 harvest, from grapes grown on Fonseca’s own vineyards and on other top properties in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior areas of the Douro. LBV Unfiltered is aged in large wooden vats and then drawn off into bottle with no fining or filtration. The result is a naturally expressive wine which has sacrificed none of its depth and fullness of flavour. Late Bottled Vintage is bottled when ready to drink. A limited quantity of this outstanding blend was produced. Very deep, intense ruby colour with a very narrow brick rim. The nose is almost impenetrable, tightly packed with dense dark berry fruit aroma, back cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant. The uncompromising berry fruit character is archetypal Fonseca, the intensity taken to an even higher degree by the fact that the wine is unfiltered, carrying all its body and extract into the bottle. The dark brooding fruit is lifted by a discrete minty, resiny aura of wild herbs. This multivintage rare Tawny is an average age of about 25 years. Formerly known as Tawny Port, it holds a special place in the Woodstock stable. Wine industry pioneer Doug Collett made McLaren Vale Grenache and Shiraz fortifieds in the 1960s and 1970s. He aged them in old Brandy barrels for future generations. Today, his son Scott and grandson Peter continue the fortified tradition at Woodstock. The red grape colours have precipitated away over time, leaving a true ‘tawny’ colour after two decades in barrel. A powerful and complex nose full of nuts, toffee, intense spice and fresh rancio characters reflect its age and complexity. On the palate, toffee, mocha, coffee and intense nuttiness all combine to create rich luscious flavours. The finish is long with lingering flavours of a fine very old fortified. But now it’s underscored by a wedding-ring-width line of golden praline which etches, lines and orders the wine, strikes its form, after the manner of a margarita’s lime-salt riming. This does not (yet) affect the basic flavour of the Manzanilla. It’s no longer (quite) Manzanilla; but nor is it yet (not quite) Manzanilla Pasada. It’s simply ‘Azahar’. Camomile lawn, orange blossom (Azahar), melon tendrils, sea-spray, densely spongy honey-lemon tea cake. Full and rich in the mouth, excellent abstract line. Extra ageing doesn’t necessarily mean development and body, though: it’s actually sleeker, with a better defined linear aspect, more nimble with sense of movement. The abstract threads which contribute line and freshness (including acid and diatomaceous minerals, that algal herb aspect) develop and work together. Chalk, mineral, flor, acid, aldehyde and a brassy textural weight (the looming pasada character) are six fibres lightly spliced together, and work beautifully through the dense sponge, earthen richness. The pasada character appears as a line of burnished bronze, a metallic thread wound gently with the other elements and functions as an edging shadow, sliding through the wine, aligning the round Callejuela style.
