Dr Loosen - Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG 2020 750ml
"This GG RÉSERVE reproduces the characteristics of the Grosse Lage Wehlener Sonnenuhr in textbook fashion. The site is dominated by blue slate, and it is often said that Wehlener Sonnenuhr produces the most distinctive blue slate wines. If you were to compare wines to people, a Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling would be like a graceful ballerina. They are very elegant, very fine and playful, with delicate stone fruit aromas, white peach in particular. The actual Sonnenuhr (“sundial”) was built in 1842 by our family relative, Jodocus Prüm, and then became the namesake for the world-renowned Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. The grapes for this wine grow in the “Laychen,” the old name for a parcel of original, ungrafted vines that are at least 130 years old. When young, these wines are captivatingly fine and playful with floral, citrus and vineyard peach aromas. But the GGR rewards extended cellaring with greater harmony and deeper expression of this extraordinary vineyard.
The refined, mineral-edged top dry Riesling from the Mosel valley's famous Sonnenuhr ("Sundial") vineyard. It is perfect with shell fish, fresh oysters, sushi and grilled fresh fish." - Dr. Loosen
"Tasted as a cask sample in Wiesbaden in August 2021, the 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben offers a very intense and beautifully spicy, slatey nose. Rich and intense on the palate, with remarkable freshness and lemon flavors, this is an intense and dense, very salty and persistent Sonnenuhr from ancient vines. Very promising. Drink 2027 - 2045." 93-95 points. - Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate (September 2021)
"Stunning white-fruit and floral aromas are married to a full and very silky body. Concentration and gracefulness all at once. A charmer with more than enough structure." 94-95 Points. - Stuart Piggot, jamessuckling.com
