Intel: "From block 222, contour-planted in 1971; destemmed and open fermented with thrice daily plunging; about 21 days on skins; matured in 100% new French oak barriques for 15 months. This is in a good place, still notably vibrant with dark berries, plum and anise, but it’s also positively developed, with a softness of texture, depth and sway, the oak soaked up, contributing but welling beneath the surface."

Intel: "It’s pure silk. It tastes of plum, mint and peppercorn but it’s the creaminess of the oak, and the velvet of the fruit, that distinguishes it. That and the integration of said flavours with the wide sheet of tannin, and the eventual spread of flavour through the long finish. Even as a ten-year-old this is bold and primary; it’s just starting to enter its prime, though it will remain there for years."

Score: 95pts
Intel: "Full brick-red colour of an aged wine; the bouquet is peppery/earthy and loaded with coconutty oak: even at this age it's quite evident. The wine is better balanced on palate, with the dry savouriness of age and quite mellow flavour and texture. Moderately long with a touch of elegance. An old-school style of shiraz that gives more pleasure where it matters, in the mouth."
