"This vineyard lies directly adjacent to the eastern side of the Prälat and is so steep that stone steps were built centuries ago to allow workers better access to the vines. While wines from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr resemble a graceful “ballerina,” those from the Treppchen are like muscular, free-style climbers. The iron-rich red slate soils produce wines that are rich, vibrant, and complex, with an intensely mineral finish.
Volcanic activity and the formation of the meandering Mosel valley created this striking red slate soil in Erden long ago.
The grapes for this great, dry wine ripen in the oldest parcel of the Treppchen vineyard, where there is always enough wind to prevent rot from developing in the first place. This allows for very long ripening periods. The Treppchen vineyard, with its bright red, iron-rich slate, produces spicy, complex wines of enormous minerality and density, characterized by aromas of red apple and ripe quince." - Erni Loosen
