The Final Deed | Black Box 2024

A Black Box beer with a larger-than-life story.

This was a beer that was planned months in advance with Deeds. We had agreed on a beer style and, due to the impressive barrel inventory and the generosity of Deeds, we were presented with a unique opportunity for a group blended beer. This diverse group included a few prominent beer influencers to participate in the barrel tasting alongside staff from Carwyn Cellars, The Coolroom Podcast and of course, the talented Deeds brewers and Sales Manager.

A flavour-packed tasting session that saw us go through 10 different barrels, talking about their pros, cons, aroma & flavour, which got increasingly harder as the session went on. We decided on 3 great barrels that showcased distinct characteristics that the collective liked. The afternoon finished with beers at the bar after this immersive, once-in-a-lifetime session (definitely last in a lifetime!).

Little did we know that only 4 days after doing this tasting and sharing our stories online, the official announcement of the Deeds closure would break the news. Honestly, in a year full of complications for multiple breweries, this one really struck a chord with us and evidently, so much of the craft beer drinking public.

Worried that this beer would not see a release with administrators taking over and liquidation looming, we were determined to get this beer into your hands and rushed to contact the different people involved to purchase the 3 barrels selected and make this beer a reality.

Enter Fox Friday with their amazing brew team and equipment. With the help of Justin and Ned from Fox and Curt from Deeds (and Ben Carwyn himself for picking up and transporting the full barrels!), this group worked to get the beer out from barrels and packaged, all while a reunion was also taking place between these brewers who all worked together at Deeds only a few years ago.

This collaborative effort is The Final Deed, a beer that not only represents one of the best barrel ageing programs of the whole country, but also the involvement of beer industry people, fans, and even former Deeds staff. An outstanding way to send off this highly acclaimed, award-winning, and beloved brewery.

Thank you, Deeds Brewing, for your contribution to this industry we love, and for making it better through your beers and people.

The Black Box 2024

Day Six of The Black Box brought not only a beer, but a bucketload of emotions. The closure of Deeds Brewing is no longer news, but we can’t stop thinking of how much we are going to miss these beers on our shelves and in our different collaborations and boxes.

An absolute barrel display. The blend of the different selected barrels brings massive notes of bourbon, burnt caramel, rich toffee, brownie & coffee cake. It has a roasty bitter finish with a lingering vanilla aftertaste. Pretty big beer, with layers and layers of flavour. What a way to celebrate this amazing brewery and their accomplishments.
