How could a 10 hour round road trip with co-workers possibly result in a great day? Easy, when you visit Sailors Grave. To celebrate Sailors Grave’s 10th birthday, we finally made pilgrimage all the way out to their new brewery, bringing an offering of 5L of Maidenii vermouth for the special collab beer in the works.
Located in a beautiful part of the world, the first thing you notice about Sailors Grave is the authenticity. Chickens (and some very cute baby chicks) are scratching away on the grass, the garden showcases natives, a pen of goats bleat cheerfully up the back, and the taproom fit out is both warm & airy, blurring the line between outside and inside on that sunny Wednesday afternoon. After spending time with Chris & Gab, you can see how this location is an extension of their passions and values; from milling corn & making their own tortillas (honestly, don’t get them started on corn varieties!) through to the hand painted details throughout the venue that are a delight to discover. And we haven’t even got to the beer!
Sailors Grave brew easy to drink beers with creative ingredients. Other the past decade, we’ve seen our fair share of their wild creations – arguably the most polarising Canvent beers (yes, multiple) we’ve ever seen, most notably ‘AMA’ (Day #12, 2020), an Abalone, Lemon & Aniseed Myrtles Gose & ‘How to Make Gravy’ (Day #20, 2019) with actual bone broth in. So when they approached us with idea for a 10th Birthday beer collab, we were so in!
The barrel in question made its way over from SA and spend time at Maidenii in Harcourt, VIC. It eventually travelled here to Melbourne before making the long journey to far corner of Victoria and into the Sailors Grave brewery. Quietly housing a mixed-fermentation saison, our arrival on bottling day saw 5L of straight vermouth added to the brew before being hand bottled. Add in a few more weeks of bottle conditioning to carbonate the brew, and we can't wait to pop a bottle or three!
