Darkness Independent Bottler
What began as Master of Malt’s micro-batch sherry finishing experimental arm, Darkness has grown to produce an ongoing 8 YO bottling as well as a variety of very limited-edition releases. They source rare and exciting casks from some of the best whisky producers in Scotland and America, finish them for an additional ~6 months in a sherry octave (think Oloroso, Manzanilla, Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel) before vatting and bottling.
Darkness had a few casks they were ready to share with the world and, after enjoying many of their previous releases, we were very keen to get an exclusive bottling in. After doing the hard yards tasting a variety of samples, we fell in love with this rare Port Charlotte cask…

Port Charlotte
Port Charlotte is a small village on the famous Scottish whisky producing island of Islay and is just down the road (literally a 5 minute drive) from Bruichladdich. It has a long and rocky history dating back to 1829, with a notable 70+ year period of closure before being acquired in 2000 by neighbouring Bruichladdich. In 2001, Port Charlotte was revived with whisky distilled at Bruichladdich and matured in casks in the few remaining Port Charlotte distillery buildings. As you can imagine, finding a Port Charlotte whisky is as rare as hen’s teeth.

Darkness x Carwyn Cellars ‘Port Charlotte 13 YO Oloroso Cask’
With such a rich history behind it, this release does not fall short. Starting its journey distilled at Bruichladdich, this bottle is a marriage of wine casks (Domaine Leroy and Chateau d'Yquem) and a bourbon barrel. Finished in an Oloroso octave (64 litre barrel) for 11 months and finally bottled at just above what’s affectionately known as ‘Golden Strength’ / 50.1% abv, we present this beautiful release.
But most importantly, how does it taste?
“Grainy in nose with lashes of red apple and dark caramel with notes of tobacco. It has an intense woody character coming from the octave it rested in and light smokiness. Sitting at a beautiful Golden Strength, the flavour delivers vanilla, light cacao fruit, dry orange skin and a spicy finish with a nice herbal character lingering. Delightful and complex, a showcase of what a smaller sherry vessel can do to a wonderful whisky.”
