Carwyn Cellars Canvent 2018

The very first year that every beer in the Canvent calendar was brewed with the purpose of Canvent in mind! This is where the Canvent you know & love truly started!

Canvent 2018 Line-Up

#1 • 3 RAVENS (VIC) - JUICY BRUT

🍺 Brut New England IPA • 🥴 8.0% ABV

If you are going to do something, you may as well start with a bang! Brendan at Ravens is well known for pushing the boundaries of ordinary beer standards, and Juicy Brut is a textbook stab at shaking things up. Juicy meets dry, and the beer takes on a low bitterness, guava-passionfruit start with an amazingly dry body for its ABV. A mildly estery finish sticks around a while, and it definitely hides the 8% very well!

#2 • KAIJU! (VIC) - MUTATION PROGRAM SESSION SOUR

🍺 Session Sour • 🥴 3.2% ABV

KAIJU have put together a very smashable session sour that begs to be quaffed. It's got light passionfruity notes with slightly heavier guava and mild acidity, perfect for drinking while you're shamelessly keeping the heat at bay in your back-yard kitty pool surrounded by a sea of spent tinnies in an overgrown lawn.

#3 • MR. BANKS (VIC) - STICKY BANDITS

🍺 Hazy IPA • 🥴 7.2% ABV

Phoar! This one makes good on the hazy IPA's promise to be a juice bomb. Loads of pineapple and tropical fruit make it seem suitable to have for breakfast, and it still retains a little bit of a west coast hop resin giving it enough bitterness to really tie the room together, man. 'Tis a mighty fine brew!

#4 • BROUHAHA - CHERRY SOUR

🍺 Fruited Sour • 🥴 4.2% ABV

Brouhaha's head brewer previously held the production manager position with UK's Beavertown brewing, and brings some valuable experience to the table! This cherry sour is light, smashable, and clean with gentle acidity and a festive cherry character. Quenchy and refreshing.

#5 • EXIT (VIC) - LIMITED RELEASE NEIPA

🍺 New England IPA • 🥴 6.5% ABV

This one tickles in alllll the right places! Massive aromas with some hints of tangerine foreshadow a beer that is in every way a trip to happytown. A beautifully balanced body coupled with copious amounts of expensive #$!%ing hops and mild bitterness make for an exquisite day 5. Enjoy!

#6 • AKASHA (NSW) - BRUT IPA

🍺 Brut IPA • 🥴 7.0% ABV

Brut: French for "very quaffable for 7%, true to style dryness and hits hard on the hops without going over the top with bitterness." Another translation is "dry", but that is much less engaging, much like the sense of humour used in writing this post.

#7 • LITTLE BANG (SA) - sNEIPA

🍺 Sour New England IPA • 🥴 6.0% ABV

Little Bang's sNEIPA is a, shall we say, 'experimental' mashup between a kettle sour and a NEIPA, which results in a very tropical charactered beer that delivers on the juice Pairing recommended with pineapple upside-down cake. Deep fried. (Don't ask us how.)

#8 • LEFT BARREL (SA) - RED WHEAT

🍺 Red Ale • 🥴 4.9% ABV

Things certainly take a turn for the intriguing with this one! The beer uses Kveik yeast, an old Norwegian strain that has some great farmhouse characteristics as well as some very practical brewing properties, such as high heat resistance, fast fermentation, and excellent flocculation. The aroma is almost whisky-like, and the addition of juniper to the brew really accentuates a citrus spice profile. As the beer warms, it continues to reveal more and more. Serve with Szechuan pigs ears. Deep fried. (This will undoubtedly be a recurring theme.)

#9 • HOP NATION (VIC) - JEDI JUICE [BLACK]

🍺 Black IPA • 🥴 7.1% ABV

What's different? Pouring it into a glass would be the quickest way to find out. Smoked meat and heaps of roasty malt make up the backbone while a prominent bitterness gives it some contrast. Fruity/juicy notes poke through the toasty body, paying homage to the OG Jedi Juice. Pair with 16hr smoked beef brisket, flash fried at the end for good measure.

#10 • SAILORS GRAVE (VIC) - SUMMER PUDDING

🍺 Cream Sour • 🥴 4.8% ABV

Another incredible brew by Sailors Grave! Light, juicy, creamy, refreshing, clean, and above all, tasty as hell! Strawberries and cream on the palate with heaps of red berry fruit character and a wonderfully fresh finish. This is a very well executed brew!

#11 • STOMPING GROUND (VIC) - IMPERIAL NED

🍺 India Pale Lager • 🥴 8.0% ABV

OOooh this one is a lager on steroids, attitude included. Citrusy wafts, lingering bitterness and pine resin complete with a body built like a brick s**thouse. Pair with a bucket of deep fried calamari and a 24hr gym membership.

#12 • ARTISAN BREWING (WA) - FELONIOUS MONK

🍺 Session Quad • 🥴 6.5% ABV

Who needs Christmas cake when you've got one of these in your Canvent? Raisiny, estery, and textural with a delightfully dry body, and best of all, it's a smashable 6.5%. Pair with a breakfast consisting of deep fried Belgian waffles, a side of pomme frites, and a good* Jean Claude Van Damme flick. *('Good' among the general relative standard of JCVD films.)

#13 • MORNINGTON PENINSLAR (VIC) - GALAXY PASH

🍺 Dry Hopped Passionfruit Sour • 🥴 3.5% ABV

The passionfruit isn't shy, taking the front seat along with tropical fruit and lemon zest. Vibrant acidity and a light body make it a doozy of a refresher! Pair with a [deep fried] selection off your local fish & chip shop menu and a warm, thirsty arvo.

#14 • BAD SHEPHERD (VIC) - AMERICAN BROWN IPA

🍺 American Brown IPA • 🥴 6.0% ABV

'If it's brown, drink it down!' Zesty hop aromas meld with a hazelnut-toffee malt profile. Vibrant bitterness and a textural body cover the full spectrum of flavourtown. Pair with backyard smoked ribs with a little extra char, and coleslaw—uh, deepfried... Love will find a way.

#15 • BALLISTIC (QLD) - Hazy IPL

🍺 Hazy India Pale Lager • 🥴 6.0% ABV

All sorts of pineapple! Nice texture, clean and juicy with a very dry finish. Just a hint of lager with this one; the hops and the haze are the driving force behind the brew. Pair with slow-cooked sticky pork belly. Deep fry it if ya want.

#16 • FRENCHIES (NSW) - OCEANNA

🍺 Raspberry Saison • 🥴 3.5% ABV

That raspberry tho... Remarkably clean saison style with prominent raspberry the whole way through! Bright hibiscus and stewed fruit, with hints of caramelised sugar appearing after the beer warms up a little. Pair with fried ice cream and a whoooole lot of raspberries.

#17 • BLACKMAN'S (VIC) - SEA SPRAY IPA

🍺 IPA • 🥴 5.8% ABV

A through and through beach beer! Light aromas of tangerine and stone fruit delivered delivered by a nicely balanced body and very sessionable bitterness. A splash of ocean salt water gives it a light saline finish, lending a helping hand in getting your daily dose of electrolytes. Pair with lemon garlic and chilli prawns on the barbecue with fried tempura broccolini and a good old fashioned beach sunset.

#18 • CHEEKY MONKEY (WA) - MIXED BERRY GOSE

🍺 Fruited Gose • 🥴 5.3% ABV

So. Smashable. Jammy berry notes that ya might be tempted to spread on your morning toast and a nice, light acidity to go with it. Clean and refreshing! Pair with cheese and charcuterie with dried fruits and quince paste in a nice, festive environment. Deep fry something while you're at it.

#19 • LAST RITES (TAS) - COUNT DUNKULA

🍺 Black IPA • 🥴 8.2% ABV

Roasty aromas, a hint of smokey malt and zesty fruit notes. Cold drip coffee and more chocolatey roast all the way through, and a good, healthy dose of bitterness on the end. At 8.2%, it will take the edge off of most anything the holidays have yet thrown your way. Food pairing: no food required; drink with a well-sherried whisky to bring some harmony into your life. You deserve it.

#20 • OCHO BEER (TAS) - SILENT NIGHT

🍺 Dark Saison w Blood Orange • 🥴 5.0% ABV

Vinous and perfumey, heaps of banana esters with ligher notes of musk, rosewater, and caramel. Clean on the palate with a complimenting citrus line the whole way through, it keeps you coming back for another look! Pair with a decadent dessert that embodies similar qualities; like maybe a spiced banana cake with like some kinda a rosewater cream on the side. Magnifico!

#21 • BODRIGGY (VIC) - CUCUMBER SOUR PILSNER

🍺 Fruited Sour Pilsner • 🥴 4.6% ABV

Heaps of cucumber and medium acidity give it a pickley punch, with herbaceous and grassy aromas abound! The finish keeps you coming back for more, too! Pair with cajun fish tacos (battered and deep fried fish, of course) and, naturally, another beer.

#22 • SLIPSTREAM (QLD) - IMPERIAL RED ALE

🍺 Imperial Red Ale • 🥴 8.0% ABV

This one really turns things up a with a very healthy ABV and a body that verges on burly. Bright orange zest aromas precede excellent malt texture with notes of stewed fruit, gentle bitterness and a little resin on the palate. Pair with a good, hefty stew with all the tasty chunky vegetables and meat in a rich, stewy pot of stew...

#23 • OLD WIVES ALES (VIC) - CHOC WALNUT BROWNIE

🍺 Brown Ale • 🥴 6.2% ABV

Decadent! Estery aromas of bubblegum and lollies with lots of dark chocolate on the palate. Rich texture lands on the deep end of the spectrum, while a nicely placed bitterness balances out the desserty flavours nicely. Pair with more chocolate, obviously.

#24 • HAWKERS (VIC) - BOURBON BARREL AGED BARLEYWINE 2018

🍺 BBA Barleywine • 🥴 10.8% ABV

OH my. This beer spent two years sleeping away in a bourbon barrel, quietly waiting for the 24th of December. Brown sugar, crystalised honey, hints of coconut and, (dare we say) bourbon jump out, while a wonderfully rounded mouthfeel brings it home! Amazingly balanced, and the finish goes for days. Pair with friends, pair with family, pair with whatever you are doing. Just be sure you deep fry something while you're at it.
