While the valley did experience a heavy shot of heat around Labor Day, the vast majority of the Chardonnay crop had been harvested ahead of time.  The remaining fruit exhibited more “ripe” characteristics, adding greater complexity to the finished wine. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eNOSE: There’s tremendous purity on the nose of this wine.  At the same time, it’s also quite intense. Peach, apricot and kiwi drive an abundance of ripeness, which cascades into fresh cut flowers, orange blossom and cantaloupe.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003ePALATE: The citrus really comes to life here as mandarin, Meyer lemon and finally lemon verbena. Moreover, the texture is still angular and somewhat tight, which isn’t surprising given the wine’s youth. This is actually an advantage for Zinfandel, as the sun-exposed berries ripened in unison, which is always the goal. Harvest was methodical and predictable allowing for the development of complex flavors and textures.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eNOSE: The wine opens with fresh cherries, black pepper and tea leaves. It’s perfume-like and intoxicating. The varietal character is quite evident right now: forest floor, briar and roasted mushroom. That earthiness, which is part of the sense of place, is an excellent counterpoint to the dynamic fresh fruit, which leans red at first but quickly transitions to dark and dried aromas over time.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003ePALATE: Bright, candy-like fruit on the palate layers into refined but slightly-angular tannin adding tension and chewiness. Far from being fully-refined, this wine  still has some edges, which add spiciness and hint at its future development. The acid beautifully cuts through the tension, imparting the freshness and liveliness one  would expect from a young Montelena  Zinfandel.
